DESCRIPTION:\n\n		 \n\nTogether with the Swedish Policy Forum\, the Swedi
sh Chamber of Commerce in France will host a seminar with Martin Gelin\, a
n acclaimed Swedish author and journalist\, on the theme of Soft Power.\n\
n “Authoritarian states invest enormous resources in culture\, communic
ation\, and propaganda to win hearts\, shape opinions\, and expand their i
nfluence – while democratic societies too often treat soft power as a
‘luxury’ they can no longer afford.” — Martin Gelin\n\n In a time
marked by geopolitical tension\, digital fragmentation\, and a global com
petition for attention and legitimacy\, soft power has moved from the marg
ins to the center of international affairs. Soft power — the ability to
shape preferences through culture\, values\, ideas\, and policies rather t
han coercion or military force — has become one of the most contested to
ols in world politics. Originally defined by Joseph Nye in the late 1980s\
, the concept now raises urgent questions: Who controls the narratives tha
t move societies? How do cultural and media ecosystems shape democratic re
silience? And what happens when authoritarian regimes outperform open soci
eties in the battle for influence?\n\n Martin Gelin\, a Swedish journalis
t and award-winning author of seven books on American politics\, foreign a
ffairs\, and culture\, examines these dilemmas in his forthcoming book Ru
les of Attraction: Why Soft Power Matters in Hard Times. With more than tw
o decades of experience reporting from the United States and writing for o
utlets including The Guardian\, The Washington Post\, Bloomberg\, The New
York Times\, New York Magazine\, Foreign Policy\, Slate\, and Dagens Ny
heter\, Gelin brings a sharp and deeply informed perspective to how politi
cal storytelling\, cultural exports\, and digital platforms shape global p
ower.\n\n Published in Swedish in November 2025 by Volante and in English
in 2026\, Rules of Attraction challenges readers to rethink how democra
cies cultivate influence — and what is at stake if they fail to do so. T
he book will be published in more than 20 countries.\n\nModerator: Alice
Petren\, former Foreign Correspondent at Swedish Broadcasting. Author of
books on French politics. Economist from Sthlm School of Economics. \n\nP
